HISTORY OF ESTABLISHING BID

In 1993, SMECS was appointed as the consultant of “Bangladesh jewelry Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BJMEA)” for providing them technical assistance in developing gold jewelry for export. In 1994 Bangladesh Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) was trying to explore a new export market in Middle East countries and EEU countries. At that time International Gold Council (IGC) send their one consultant Mr. W.G. Schroeder a German origin; France based jewelry Design Consultant to explore the import market of gold jewelry from Bangladesh. The then president of BIMEA Mr. Anwar Hossain  introduced Engr. AMMSHK Rizvy, the chairman of SMECS and Consultant of BJMEA with Mr. W.G. Schroeder in EPB to change their views for studies in gold jewelry exporting.

It was very important time in the trade world, UNCTAD was going to be dissolved and WTO was waiting for replacing UNCTAD, TRIP & TRIM was waiting for introduced. In that crucial time Mr. Schroeder after his long time observation he found that there is no own design was being used in Bangladesh jewelry and in other crafts as well. Most of the motifs and composition was belongs to Greek, Roman, Persian, Egyptian and Indian culture; if TRIP imposed on trade. Mr. Schroder found that local artists are composing design using foreign motifs without knowing its inner language, meanings which are contradictorily does not match with our majorities belief, community and social values and culture. Then he asked for our own motifs and own design. He then find the augmentation of a full pledged design institute for research work and to create a pure design that represents Bangladesh. He then suggest Engr. Rizvy to start a new design institute which can face the challenge of 21st millennium in trade under TRIP and WTO charter.

At that time mother of Engr. Rizvy, Late Shams-e-Ara Begum, the then chairman of SMECS who participated in liberation war of 1971 as a physician under Mujibnagor Government came forward to establish such an institute donating her full pension money in 1996.
